THE KOAST STORY
If you have a dream…follow it! It takes just a few seconds to change your life…just by saying yes and stepping forward to make a change.
I had always wanted to start my own business in retail. My career had spanned 15 years in Marketing and E-Commerce across music retailing, radio and charities, but no clothing retail experience at all! What I had was a passion for creating a business that filled a need and stood apart from the competition, a business that put customer service at the centre and access to great quality products. No more corporate life (phew!) and the chance to satisfy my ambition … this is how Koast was launched!
I found premises in Haslemere in Surrey, a large garage housing wedding cars. It was a huge space with no shop front and it was also down a side street…not the obvious retail location but I had a vision to create a destination retail space. I fitted a new shop front, created two departments 0-8 years and 9-16 years and filled the store with a fabulous selection of unique childrenswear brands and traded in Haslemere for 14 years. I then expanded into Womenswear and Menswear and opened up three more stores across Surrey.
The second part of the Koast story draws on my childhood. I remember building dens, spending hours outside in rural Yorkshire and wanted to return to place that was more rural and made the move to Devon. This was 16 years ago and I have never looked back. Living within fields of cows and sheep is heaven and it was a natural move for me to relocate my business to Devon too. I opened the new store in Okehampton, Devon in 2015 initially selling childrenswear and in 2025 expanded into womenswear and menswear and have filled the store with a fabulous selection of organic and sustainable brands. From this passion and determination, I can look back after being in business over two decades and can say working in retail was one the best decisions I have ever made.
Koast is now one of the UK’s largest independent stores selling a gorgeous range of brands all over the world. I firmly believe in offering a proactive, personal, one to one customer service both in store and online. It is something that we receive praise on in-store and I would like to make sure this is carried online too!
